アマサスの国王の遺体を納めたに違いないこのアマサスの棺は、当美術館の豊富なキプ ロス美術コレクションのなかで最も重要な作品です。今も表面に残る色彩が見事なこの棺の彫刻は、国王の権威と、紀元前5世紀のキプロスの多文化社会で信仰されていた神々に対する信仰心を表しています。長い側面には、馬に乗った従者に案内されるチャリオットの列と、その後ろに続く歩兵が描かれています。主人公はおそらくパラソルの下の人物でしょう。棺の短辺には中近東で崇められた女神アシュタルテとエジプトのベス神が描かれていますが、いずれも豊穣の神として信仰されていました。
