1085. アルテミス神殿の柱(サルディス)
今ご覧になっているのは、かつて17メートルもの高さを誇った大理石の柱の一部です。17メートルというと、今のこの柱の5倍の高さです。もともとこの柱は、紀元前4世紀後半に建てられた、ギリシアの狩りと出産の女神、アルテミスの巨大な神殿にあったものです。この柱は一本か、または何本かの柱の壊れた部分を集めて復元したものです。20世紀初頭に、サルディスでアメリカ調査団が発掘したものです。サルディスは現在のトルコ（Turkey）西部にかつて存在した古代国家リュディア（Lydia）の首都でした。
このサルディスの柱は、ことに小アジアのイオニア式（Ionic）の柱の好例です。上部のらせん状のボリュート（volute）と呼ばれる渦巻き飾りにご注目ください。その渦巻き模様の間には繊細な表現のパルメット模様や円花飾り、 で装飾されています。柱の周りを回ってみると、そのとてつもない大きさと、彫刻師による精緻な装飾を実感することができます。
サルディスは小アジア南西部の都市で、ギリシアの建築や美術様式と土地固有の伝統が絶えず混じり合っていました。この柱のボリュートと、柱のあった神殿の巨大さは、この地方のギリシア風建築に顕著な特徴です。
