周到な場面設定と繊細で魅惑的な光の効果を捉えたこの作品では、グロの卓越したダゲレオタイプの技術と、洗練された視覚的感性が融合しています。シルエットとなるよう注意深く窓辺に置かれた水差し、思わず腰かけたくなるような、やわらかい日差しの中に置かれた背もたれの高い上品な椅子、表面が反射しやすいにもかかわらず中がはっきりと見えるイーゼルの上のダゲレオタイプ、舞台の背景のように閉じられたカーテンなど、場面のすみずみまで完璧に整えられています。この作品は室内と静物の写真ですが、それ以上に、グロ男爵の社会的地位、美意識、旅行暦、そして才能のポートレートに他なりません。
