机と書棚
アメリカの現存するフェデラル様式の家具の中でも独特なこのH字型の書き物机と書棚は、イギリスの家具師トマス・シェラトンの『キャビネット辞典』(1803年)の図版38に見られるシスターズ・シリンダー書棚に直接発想を得ています。しかしながら、シェラトンの作品では前面の蓋の部分が机の後部へ引き込まれるシリンダー式になっているのに比べ、この作品では長方形の折りたたみ式となっています。彩色され、金箔が貼られたガラスのドアには古代衣装を着たギリシャの踊り子が描かれています。全体的な対称性、幾何学的な抽象性、そして対照的なセンダンとマホガニーの化粧板などの特徴により、この机は新古典派様式を最も巧みに取り入れたアメリカ家具のうちに数えられます。
