中央アフリカのンキシ・ンコンディ彫刻はアフリカ美術に広く見られるジャンルです。特定の魔力が宿るとされるこれらの精霊像は、コンゴの彫刻作家と儀式の担当者との協力によって作られ、誓約や合意を記録し、悪の撲滅を象徴しました。法律を体現するマンガアカと結びつけられるこの作品は、19 世紀末にコンゴとアンゴラの沿岸地域で活躍した彫刻作家の工房で作られたものとされています。広い胸に埋め込まれた種々の金属片は、この像が地域における重要な出来事に立会い、それを保護した中心的な役割を裏付けています。
