ネーデルラント絵画で最も好まれた題材を扱ったこの作品は、観る者が物語を疑似体験できるように、1枚の絵のなかに物語の展開を描いた複数の場面で構成されています。背景の左手には、当時の谷あいの町への旅の途中、聖家族が森から出てくる様子が描かれています。聖母子のピラミッド型の構図と、造形のボリュームを表現するためにキアロスクーロ(明暗法)が使われていることから、ダヴィトがイタリアルネッサンスの表現法を意識するようになって間もない頃の作品であることが明らかです。
