ヨーロッパの風景画における画期的な作品であるこの三連祭壇画は、ドイツ南部の教会のために作られたと考えられます。パティニールは、人物像と背景のスケールを逆転させました。左から、ヨルダン川で洗礼者ヨハネから洗礼を受けるキリスト、聖ヒエロニムス、そして隠遁者聖アントニウスと彼を襲った化け物が、それぞれ広大で美しいパノラマのような風景の前に描かれています。作品は、観る者を絵画の中の巡礼の旅へといざないます。
