ヨーロッパの風景画における画期的な作品であるこの三連祭壇画は、ドイツ南部の教会のために作られたと考えられます。パティニールは、人物像と背景のスケールを逆転させました。左から、ヨルダン川で洗礼者ヨハネから洗礼を受けるキリスト、聖ヒエロニムス、そして隠遁者聖アントニウスと彼を襲った化け物が、それぞれ広大で美しいパノラマのような風景の前に描かれています。作品は、観る者を絵画の中の巡礼の旅へといざないます。
