ジョナと鯨「ジャミ・アル=タワリック」からのフォリオ
コーランのなかに表れるジョナと鯨の物語は、イスラム文化圏で広く親しまれ、「年代記抄録」を意味するこの作品のような世界史の書物によく表れます。しかしながらこの作品には文章がないため、朗読中に掲げられたか、単独で展示されるために描かれたものかも知れません。存在感のある直接的表現と強い色彩から、壁画の影響を受けたものと思われます。この作品では、鯨がジョナを浜辺に降ろし、この画題を扱った中世の西洋の絵にも表れる、ウリ科の植物がジョナの頭上に蔓を絡ませています。
