フランス女王ジャンヌ・デヴルーの時祷書

微妙な灰色の色調(グリザイユ)によってキリストと聖ルイの生涯を描いたこの小さな書物は、驚くほど彫刻的な印象を与えます。作品では、聖ルイが牢獄で奇跡的に祈祷書を受け取る場面を表しています。司教、乞食、踊り手、演奏家など、700人余りの中世パリの人々、そして猿、ウサギ、犬、 架空の動物などが表されており、どれもが鋭い観察眼、優れた描写、そして想像力を駆使して生き生きと描かれています。この時祷書は女王が個人的に日々の祈祷に使うものとして作られました。ジャンヌ・デヴルーは、1371年にこれをシャルル5世に遺贈し、彼の死後、弟のジャン・デ・フランス(ベリー公)のコレクションに収蔵されました。
