バーバラ・ヘップワースは、ヘンリー・ムーアとともに20世紀の最も偉大なイギリス人彫刻家であると同時に、歴史上最も優れた女性彫刻家として評価されています。巨大なニレの木の幹から直接彫り出して制作したこの作品は、彼女が彫刻家として頂点を極めていた時期に発表され、成熟期の重要な作品に位置づけられています。卵形の形状は、1933年に人生の転機となったパリのコンスタンティン・ブランクーシのアトリエを訪問した際に着想を得たもので、紐は親しい芸術家仲間のナウム・ガボとラスロー・モホリ=ナギの作品に由来します。ハンガリーからの避難民だったガボとモホリ=ナギは、ヘップワースと彼女の夫、ベン・ニコルソンを中心としたイギリスの芸術家サークルの仲間となりました。
