Untitled (cyborg pelvis)
Lee Bul, a leading contemporary artist, has explored issues of gender, inequality, oppression, and technology through her varied artistic practice since the 1980s. This porcelain relates to her Cyborg series, transhuman hybrids of flesh and machine that address our relationship to technology and our cultural and repressive attitudes toward women and their bodies. In creating parts of a cyborg in porcelain, Lee not only links opposing concepts of human and machine, beauty and horror, and utopia and dystopia, but also traditional and modern, fragmentation and wholeness, and old and new technologies.
