The Female Seven Ages
Wilson's imagery on this instructive fan leaf responds to a famous passage in Shakespeare's "As You Like It" (Act II, Scene VII) that describes the stages of male life from infancy to old age. Expanding the theme to encompass girls and women, the artist here a female subject's progress from babyhood, through scenes centered on a schoolgirl, love-lorn maiden, wife, matron, widow and, finally, faithful and resigned old woman (see 38.91.21 for Wilson's related design titled "Shakespeare's Seven Ages").
