Cedars of Lebanon
Montfort and Lehoux were part of a wave of European travelers whose interest in the ancient ruins of the eastern Mediterranean grew to encompass the region’s people and natural features. The painters sketched the grove of giant cedars (Cedrus libani) depicted here, near the villages of Ehden and Bsharri in mountainous northern Lebanon, from September 10 to 17, 1837. An oil sketch of the central tree in the present work is one of nearly a thousand studies by Montfort held in the Musée du Louvre, Paris, but Lehoux’s legacy is scarce. Research on which painter produced this sketch is ongoing.
