This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.The lower fan is a copy of part of the Stele of the Divine Prophecy of the Heavenly Revelation from 276 CE, which is among the most distinctive examples of early Chinese calligraphy. Though the writing’s sharply pointed tips, modulated lines, and sinuous forms were considered ugly by Song-dynasty antiquarians, by Li Jian’s time the Stele had come to be widely admired for its unusually vigorous brushwork.
