Notre Dame

Publisher B. G. Teubner
1912
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 690
To many, the cathedral of Notre Dame in Paris is the poster child of Gothic architecture. Fittingly, this iconic view of the structure from the left bank of the Seine was conceived as a commercial poster for display in private homes and schoolrooms. The initiative to cater to these demographics originated with the Leipzig publishing house B. G. Teubner, which hired talented young artists such as Beckert to create compositions for the relatively inexpensive original graphic artworks. The Notre Dame poster was part of a set of six views of famous French cathedrals and other monuments by Beckert, published in 1912. The individual prints bear the text "Pictures for Teaching Foreign Languages," suggesting that the imagery was used in schools to discuss their subject matter in the appropriate tongue.
