빈 공방의 재정 지원자였던 은행가/기업가 오토 프리마베시는 1912년 그의 딸 메다의 초상화를 의뢰하였습니다. 이 초상화를 위해 메다는 비엔나에 있던 클림트의 화실에서 포즈를 취했으며, 1914년 같은 화실에서 클림트는 그녀의 모친인 배우 유제니아 프리마베시(결혼 전의 성은 부첵)의 초상화도 그렸습니다. 클림트는 수많은 연필 습작으로 다양한 포즈를 시도해 본 후에 이 작품이 보여주는 정면을 향해 똑바로 선 포즈를 통해 9살 소녀의 쾌할함을 표현하였습니다.
