고아석과 금제 용기

소위 고아석이라고 하는 것은 인도 서해안의 작은 주 고아에 살고 있던 예수회 수사들이 제조하였습니다. 이러한 고아석은 인조위석(사슴, 양 및 영양의 내장에서 발견되는 담석과 털의 혼합물)인데, 이를 긁어서 차 또는 물에 타서 마시면 약효가 있다고 사람들은 믿었습니다. 수사들은 위석을 담는 데 사용하는 정교한 금제 또는 은제 용기를 제작하여 유럽으로 수출하였습니다. 여기 위석을 담은 계란형 금제 용기는 두 개의 반구형으로 구성되며 각 반구의 표면을 투공, 돋을새김 및 조탁 기법으로 장식하였습니다. 표면 장식패턴에는 유니콘과 그리핀 등 다양한 동물 문양이 첨가되기도 합니다.
