수태고지
멤링은 이 수태고지를 현재 뮌헨에 있는 로히르 반 데르 베이덴의 성 콜룸바 제단화의 좌익에 두었으나 그의 혁신적인 표현을 통해 무릎을 꿇고 있는 성모가 두 천사의 부축을 받는 실신하는 성모로 대체되었습니다. 멤링은 다른 15세기 플랑드르 화가들처럼 종교적인 형상을 일상 생활의 회화적 언어로 기술하였습니다. 백합은 성모의 순결을 상징하고 비어 있는 촛대는 세상의 빛인 그리스도를 곧 낳아야 하는 그녀의 역할을 의미합니다. 가브리엘의 성직자 의복은 미사의 의식을 암시하는 동시에 그리스도가 육신을 가지고 인간으로 태어났음을 의미합니다. 성령의 비둘기는 육신을 가지고 인간으로 태어난 것이 성서를 이루기 위해 일어난 일임을 의미하며 성모는 왼손으로 성령의 비둘기를 가리키고 있습니다.
