장식이 정교한 방에 앉아 있는 성모 마리아는 대천사 가브리엘의 갑작스런 출현에 놀라며 독서대의 책에서 눈을 돌려 가브리엘을 봅니다.가브리엘은 은총이 가득하신 마리아님(AVE GRATIA PLENA)이라고 적힌 두루마리를 들고 있습니다. 천상에서 천부께서 성모 마리아를 향해 십자가를 든 아기 예수를 보내고 성령의 비둘기가 이를 선도합니다. 그들은 성모 마리아의 귀를 향해 내려가고 성모는 수태를 믿게 됩니다. 둘러싸인 정원은 성모의 처녀성을 강조하며 아름다운 도기 항아리에 꽂혀 있는 한 송이 하얀 백합은 성모의 순결을 상징합니다.
