넘버 13(황색 위에 백색, 적색)
1950년 이후, 로스코는 회화의 수평 띠를 3색 또는 4색으로 제한했으며, 타계할 때까지 이러한 구도로 작업을 하였습니다. 로스코는 다양한 종류의 물감을 사용하고 물감 층의 두께에 변화를 주면서 때로는 화실에서 작품의 방향을 바꾸어서 작업하기도 하였습니다. 실제로 이 회화의 물감을 칠한 패턴을 보면 작가가 이 캔버스를 한동안 뒤집어 작업했음을 알 수 있습니다. 로스코는 회화의 부드러운 빛이 관람객을 안아 주기를 바랐으며 대형 작품을 제작하는 이유는 “거대하고 위압적이지” 않으며 “아주 친밀한 느낌을 주는 인간적”인 작품을 원했기 때문이라고 말하였습니다.
