Autumn Forest

Referencing myth, literature, and the history of art, Kiefer has often used landscape to instigate cultural memory. In Autumn Forest, the artist paired a small watercolor of the partial face of a reclining woman with a larger sheet depicting cropped, leafless trees near the Rhine, a historical symbol of German nationalism. Placed above the landscape, the woman’s face personifies the sky, as in love poetry. Together, the works and the interval between them make us aware of the associations we may bring to such images, whether or not they are presented by the artist.
