Brush washer

13th–14th century
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 220
This brush washer features thick dark and thin brown crackles that combine in a pattern known as “gold thread and iron wire,” a decoration characteristic of Ge ware. While the location of the kiln is subject to debate, recent archaeological discoveries reveal that such works were most likely produced in the Hangzhou region. They may have come from the same kilns that made Guan (or official) ware for the imperial Song court.
