In 1926–27 violent uprisings by rebels who called themselves Cristeros led to a civil war that continued until 1929. The Cristeros opposed the government policies of Plutarco Elías Calles, who sought to eliminate the pow-er of the church and to suppress popular religious celebrations. The uprising, supported by the church, which wanted to regain its lost privileges, diminished some of the progress made by the revolution.
