Peace Restored by the Genius of Happiness

Publisher Sarah Ashton British
1801
Not on view
This unmounted fan-leaf celebrates an anticipated peace between Britain and France which was signed in 1802. The brief Peace of Amiens lasted only between March 27 and May 1 but allowed British travelers to freely visit France for the first time since the start of the French Revolutionary War. When conflict resumed under Napoleon, most Britons would again be forced to remain within their home islands until 1815. At the center of this fan leaf, the artist uses female figures to embody Peace and Happiness, the first holding a sword and accompanied by a cupid and doves, the second setting fire to emblems of war. Smaller scenes at left and right symoblize Wealth and Commerce and Peace and Plenty.
