Shakespeare's Seven Ages

After George Wilson British
Publisher Sarah Ashton British

Not on view
This fan leaf contains a series of oval images illustrating a famous passage in Shakespeare's "As You Like It" (Act II, Scene IV), spoken by the melancholic courtier Jaques to Duke Senior. The text begins "All's the world's a stage, and all the men and women merely players; They have their exits and their entrances, And one man in his time plays many parts, His acts being seven ages..." Since the imagery here relates only to male subjects, Wilson designed a second fan which traces the life stages of girls and women titled "The Female Seven Ages" (see 38.91.20).
