Meet the Artist—Hew Locke: Gilt

Go behind the scenes with artist Hew Locke, who discusses the inspiration and making of “Gilt,” The Met’s 2022 Facade Commission.

Borrowing the format of trophies—emblems of competition and victory—Hew Locke has created four sculptures that reflect on the exercise and representation of power. These works feature details inspired by objects in The Met collection, many rendered unfamiliar through appropriation, fragmentation, and recombination.

On view September 15, 2022 through May 22, 2023.

A graffitied concrete wall in a blacktop court, surrounded by chain-link fencing. Rows of hands expressing different signs fill the court in front of the wall.
”The city has changed so much in the years since you last lived here that no structure can be taken for granted. But the wall is still standing, coated with a patchwork of paint...“
