Coloring Perception

A variety of trees

Yisrael S. Untitled, 2016

This Teen Blog post is part of the series #ArbusMetSquad, which showcases photography and writing by participants of the Summer 2016 Teen Studio—Photography program, who were inspired by the exhibition diane arbus: in the beginning.

«Photography offers us the ability to play with perception by focusing attention on things others may have missed or even creating something that couldn't be seen in real life. Although it sometimes goes unnoticed, color is entirely responsible for manipulating the tone and mood of an image. Choosing between enhanced, black-and-white, or natural color can completely alter the viewer's perspective.»

A white flower with green leaves

Caitlyn K. Untitled, 2016

As a photographer, I look for things that stand out to me, like a single flower in a bush in the middle of the city. I chose this picture because of the vibrant colors of the flower and its leaves. Through editing, I strengthened the saturation and contrast of my photo to further exaggerate its beauty. With the help of color, I hope that my picture stands out in the same way that this flower did on the street.

The Manhattan skyline against a blue sky

Michalle K. Skies & Cities, 2016

I took this photograph around 72nd street, at the pier in Riverside Park South. Instead of pointing my camera forward towards the New Jersey side, I pointed my camera backwards, in the direction of New York. I saw the colors in the sky and loved how the reflective surfaces of the buildings blended in with it. The purple and pink colors in the sky are what make the picture. They elicit certain feelings, like calmness.

A pink-tinted photgraph of the pool and windows of The Sackler Wing

Sophia M. Untitled, 2016

The Sackler Wing is a type of real-life illusion. Visitors can walk by The Temple of Dendur and sit on stone benches surrounded by a pool resembling the Nile River. Walking into the other galleries that feature glass cases filled with ancient Egyptian artifacts makes you feel like you're in a museum looking at objects, but in The Temple of Dendur, you feel like an Egyptian. I photographed the reflections of The Temple of Dendur using a pink-colored gel. The photograph echoes the surreal experience of being in the Temple, transported back in time thousands of years to ancient Egypt.

A person sitting on a rock by lake with a tree branch in the foreground

Alexia W. Untitled, 2016

I chose this image because it sets a tranquil mood. When I took this photo, I felt that it didn't need any enhancement because the colors were already so vivid. The aspect that stands out to me the most about my photo is the man sitting in the bottom left corner. This photograph is more than just a view of nature: it's a moment of curiosity that is now frozen in time.
