Met Museum Presents
Warhol Today
: A Series of Talks, Tours and Performances Featuring Patti Smith, Dean & Britta, Kalup Linzy, and Others, Framing the Exhibition Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years at
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, September—December 2012

Met Museum Presents, the Metropolitan Museum’s newly renamed event series, announces Warhol Today, a series of concerts, talks, and tours extending the Met’s exhibition Regarding Warhol:  Sixty Artists, Fifty Years, which is on view September 18—December 31, 2012.  Warhol Today offers concerts by Patti Smith and Dean & Britta;  cabaret performances by Kalup Linzy; a talk with Andy Cohen, Vincent Fremont, and Deborah Kass; and private gallery tours with choreographer Miguel Gutierrez and curators Marla Prather and Ian Alteveer that offer unique perspectives on, as well as different ways to experience, this historic exhibition on the life and work of one of America’s most iconic artists.

For decades, critics have noted Andy Warhol’s dominating influence in contemporary art, but as of yet no exhibition has explored its full nature or extent not only in the visual realm but also in performance, media, and pop culture. Regarding Warhol: Sixty Artists, Fifty Years is the first major exhibition to do so through approximately 45 works by Warhol alongside 100 works by some 60 other artists. This innovative exhibition—which juxtaposes prime examples of Warhol’s paintings, sculpture, and films with those by other artists—is extended through Warhol Today to include performance and conversation.

The exhibition is made possible by Morgan Stanley.

Additional support is provided by the Gail and Parker Gilbert Fund and The Daniel and Estrellita Brodsky Foundation.  The exhibition is supported by an indemnity from the Federal Council on the Arts and the Humanities.

Tickets to the events of Warhol Today are available at www.metmuseum.org/tickets or by calling 212-570-3949.

Warhol Cabaret in the Petrie Court Café:  Kalup Linzy’s “Introducing Kaye”
Friday & Saturday, September 14 & 15, 2012, at 6:30  and 8:00 p.m. in the Petrie Court Café
During the opening weekend of the exhibition, the Met’s Petrie Court Café will be transformed into “Warhol Cabaret,” featuring Kalup Linzy. Linzy, whose video work appears in the Regarding Warhol exhibition, will perform original songs, as well as covers, against a video backdrop, introducing his new, emerging persona: The Artist Kaye. Linzy’s sharp-witted, mercurial stage presence channels the creative sizzle and edginess of Warhol’s multimodal portraiture.
In a multidisciplinary practice that includes videos, performances, and music, Kalup Linzy creates satirical narratives inspired by television soap operas, telenovelas, and Hollywood melodramas. Bringing an irreverent approach to stereotypes of race, gender, and sexuality, Linzy performs, most often in drag, in a series of memorable recurring roles. The artist serves as writer, director, cinematographer, editor, and actor—and, in a distinctive strategy, also voices and overdubs the dialogue of multiple characters. At once comic, raunchy, and poignant, Linzy's unique narrative videos fuse dramatic intensity with melodramatic irony. Kalup Linzy biography

“Andy Warhol and Reality TV” with Andy Cohen, Vincent Fremont, and Deborah Kass
Tuesday, October 2, 2012, at 6:00 p.m. in the Grace Rainey Rogers Auditorium
Andy Warhol once said, “I’m really jealous of everybody who’s got their own show on television.  I want a show of my own.”  Warhol eventually starred in several series, culminating in Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes, which Warhol conceived for MTV in the 1980s.  A quarter of a century later, Warhol’s idea that “Cable TV is the ultimate America” has come true—reality television and the celebrities it has created have become dominant forces in popular culture.  TV host (Watch What Happens Live), producer (Real Housewives, Top Chef), and author Andy Cohen; filmmaker and close Warhol associate Vincent Fremont; and artist Deborah Kass (creator of The Warhol Project, an homage to Warhol’s portraiture) discuss this unexplored aspect of Warhol’s legacy.
