The Gaceta Callejera (Street Gazette) reported on notable events in Mexico City. This issue was published in May 1892, when there was considerable opposition to the reelection of President Porfirio Díaz. The image and text describe violent clashes between mounted police and protesters that took place over a three-day period. During the 1890s, Díaz enjoyed wide support from middle-class Mexicans, a fact reflected here in the focus on disturbances that "pacifists" had to endure during the protests.
