Saint Andrew

ca. 1610
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 619
This reduced workshop replica extracts Christ’s apostle Andrew from a larger canvas by El Greco himself, Saints Andrew and Francis (ca. 1595; Museo del Prado, Madrid). The circulation of studio replicas during El Greco’s lifetime demonstrates the demand and impact of his innovative style. Such modestly scaled canvases of single figures were produced for the art market on speculation. Saint Andrew is known as Christ’s first follower and is said to have preached in Scythia, Asia Minor, and Greece, where he was reportedly martyred on an X-shaped cross like the one seen here.
