Dress

Design House Schiaparelli French
Designer Elsa Schiaparelli Italian
fall 1935
Not on view
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
In the sumptuous world of haute couture in the mid- to late-1930s, this dress is a tour-de-force demonstration of minimalism. Positively Spartan, it stresses structure, reduces devices of decoration and eliminates extraneous elements. Shaping and ornament is achieved through shirring and seaming.
