Reflection, New York

Lisette Model American, born Austria
1939–45
Not on view
Model arrived in New York from Europe in 1938 and some eighteen months later began photographing the collagelike play of reflections and displays in city windows, from the fashionable shops of Fifth Avenue to the lunchrooms of the Lower East Side. For Model, the store window captured all the dynamism and theater of the street-its endless cast of characters, advertisements, skyscrapers-in a single image. In this picture, she has spotted a fellow urban bystander-this time looking out from the other side of a plate-glass window-surrounded by the reflections of his view onto the street.
