Parlourmaid and Under-Parlourmaid Ready to Serve Dinner

Bill Brandt British, born Germany
ca. 1934
Not on view
In Brandt's first book, The English at Home (1936), he juxtaposed the privileged and working classes, frequently using his friends and family as subjects. Pratt, the stern parlourmaid in the country house of one of the photographer's wealthy uncles, was a particular favorite of Brandt's, perhaps because she so thoroughly inhabited her role.
