In these two yachting scenes, several layers of artifice—the calculated informality of the poses; the seamless blending of studio set and painted background; details such as a tilted deck, a flapping sail, a hand securing a hat against the wind—coalesce into a marvelous naturalism that belies the pictures’ cobbled-together construction.
