Soft Landing

Oliver Wasow American
1987
Not on view
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
The stock-in-trade of supermarket tabloids, images of UFOs test the relationship between photography and belief. In Soft Landing, as in his many other images of mysteriously floating disks and orbs, Wasow courts doubt by distorting found images, running them through a battery of processes, including photocopying, drawing, and superimposition. The resulting photographs play with the human propensity to invest form with meaning, offering just enough detail to spur the imagination.
