Small Flower Painting V

Joe Brainard American
1968
Not on view
Brainard once said, "I've never really been a Pop artist; I was in Pop Art shows." On the surface, the imagery in this work and its flat, colorful, frontal presentation is in keeping with a Pop Art sensibility and relates to Andy Warhol's much larger flower pictures from the 1960s. However, the intimate nature of this small work and the intensely personal, often autobiographical meanings of much of Brainard's images differentiate them from Pop Art.
