Omer Calendar

ca. 1825
Not on view
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.
The Omer is the seven-week period between the Jewish holidays of Passover and Shavuot. The biblical command to count the forty-nine days between the holidays has led to the creation of many kinds of counting devices, including calendars such as this example, which is composed almost completely out of micrography. It presents the blessing and count for each day of the Omer and the liturgical texts from all the major Jewish holidays. These texts, taken from Esther, Ruth, Song of Songs, Ecclesiastes, and Lamentations, make up the micrographic border.
