Titan's Goblet at the Approach of the Third Millennium

Stephen Hannock is a popular and prolific realist painter known for his skillful and worshipful updates of well-known paintings by canonical figures in the history of American art, such as Thomas Cole. Titan’s Goblet at the Approach of the Third Millennium is Hannock’s homage to Cole’s enigmatic The Titan’s Goblet in The Met’s collection (04.29.2). Diminutive and thinly painted, it is essentially abstract, revealing a round form extending beyond the top border in the midst of a dark, moody atmosphere. A few light brushstrokes of light blue paint suggest water pouring from the orb and splashing into a body of water that runs along the bottom edge. The painting’s dark and abstract atmospheric effect is reminiscent of James McNeill Whistler’s Nocturne in Black and Gold—The Falling Rocket (ca. 1875).
