This work of art is currently on loan to the museum.This painting epitomizes the austere classicism and jewel tones of Vouet’s mature career. Following his return to Paris from Rome in 1627, he set up a large studio that would train many of the French Royal Academy’s leading painters. Vouet rigorously adhered to ancient ideals during this period. The sobriety and simplicity of form were a means of reformulating Italian precedents and establishing French art as a major contender on the European stage.
