Variant of Paris: The Day-Length Dinner Dress

February 1949
On view at The Met Fifth Avenue in Gallery 852
When Bassman sent home her first round of photographs from Paris, friends from the Bazaar office wrote back with enthusiasm, dispelling her own uncertainty about the work. The high-stakes trip had been hectic—full of colorful encounters and unforeseen snafus that left little time to plan. She nevertheless managed to coax a bit of romance from even the most challenging fashion assignments, like this striking Dior headpiece.
