Drumkit for Alex González of Maná used during the 2023-2024 México Lindo y Querido tour
On loan to The Met
This work of art is currently on loan to the museum. The skulls and skeletons that pervade rock and pop culture both signal danger and rebellion and offer a vehicle for engaging with death in secular society. This drumkit, created for Alex González of the Latin rock band Maná, deepens the symbolism. Expressing the group’s Mexican heritage, it features the iconic skull imagery of Día de Muertos, a celebration that openly acknowledges death and its equalizing power. By painting and customizing this drum- kit and others for numerous rock groups, John Douglas joins an ancient global lineage of artists who have crafted anthropomorphic drums.
