Dobbs: Fifth Avenue at 57th Street, Spring: "Fashions for the Feminine Turn of Mind" [trade catalogue]
A leading men’s hatter, Dobbs was established in 1908 and operated at several New York locations. They added women’s furnishings to their offerings and opened a flagship store in 1917 at 620 Fifth Avenue, near 50th Street. When Rockefeller Center was constructed another move had to be made, in 1928, to the corner of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street (where Bergdorf's is today). Unfortunately these luxurious premises closed in 1930 as a victim of the Depression. This catalogue cover features women wearing stylish cloche hats and visiting a display of contemporary art, perhaps a reference to The Museum of Modern Art which opened November 7, 1929 in the Hecksher Building at 730 Fifth Avenue.
