Edwin Davis French, A Memorial: His Life, His Art
French's work may be familiar to Watson Library readers, as he created two finely engraved bookplates for the Metropolitan. French produced several other engravings for the Museum, including a membership certificate for 1896 and an invitation to the inauguration ceremonies of the new building in 1894. French began his career working as an engraver for the Whiting Manufacturing Company from 1869 to 1876. From 1883 to 1886 he studied drawing and painting at the Art Students League of New York under William Sartain. In 1894 he began designing and engraving bookplates and similar work on copper; during his career he made 245 bookplates for private collectors, clubs, and public institutions. French's work can also be found in publications of the Grolier Club, Union League, and Society of Iconophiles.
