View of Castel Nuovo, Naples
A view of Naples from the pier, with the Castel Nuovo at center by French painter Archille-Etna Michallon. It was drawn in Naples, where he visited between May and October 1819.The architecture and its patina of age are described with impressive precision, but the modernity of the composition lies in the dramatic perspective and foreshortening of the foreground, with the diagonal of the quai and the heavy stone posts.
The first owner of the sheet, according to the donor, was Léon Cogniet (1794-1880), Michallon’s friend and fellow artist.
