The years 1917 to 1930 mark Matisse’s early Nice period, when his main subject was the female figure in the role of the odalisque, often adorned in fanciful clothes and posed in an opulent interior. His earliest Nice works feature thick oil paint or heavy charcoal worked across the surface with an animated hand. As the period progressed, however, Matisse altered course: by 1929, he almost completely eliminated painting from his practice and focused instead on refined line drawings such as this one to synthesize his sensations. He stated that his drawings represent paintings executed with restricted means.
