Civil War spring lancet in book-form box

between 1860 and 1869
Not on view
The box is carved of solid maple, with three raised double bands on the spine. Incised with thin double lines and stained in different patterns on all sides so as to resemble a traditional mottled calfskin bookbinding. The box has a slide lid and contains a shaped cut-out compartment to house a spring lancet. The lancet is made of brass and steel, engraved with decorative edges, floral patterns, and the initials(?) G.V.G. A brass sliding lid covers the internal spring and release mechanisms.. -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman.
