Case carved from solid wood - likely maple. Separately made lid including two integral wooden hinges with ferrous pins. Design drawn in black ink, depicting a sailing ship on the lid and a castle on the bottom.The top hinge was repaired with new wood and retouching. Most penwork has faded and was enhanced with paint or ink. After, the exterior surfaces received a thickly applied clear varnish. -- description by Mindell Dubansky in consultation with Lynn Heckman
