Mahakala in the form of a Brahman

15th century
Not on view
This black-and-gold (nak thang) thangka depicts Mahakala in the form of a Brahman (Brahmanarupa Mahakala), one of the three principal protector deities of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism. Mahakala occupies the center of the composition, standing in a warrior’s stance atop a recumbent figure, brandishing a flaming sword and a skull cup. He is surrounded by wrathful attendants, dakinis, demons, and additional manifestations of Mahakala within a landscape of swirling flames. Executed primarily in gold against a dark ground with vivid red accents, the painting exemplifies the refined aesthetic of Tibetan gold-on-black painting. The composition is framed by borders of skulls, vajras, and flames, while captions beneath many of the figures identify deities, lineage masters, and ritual participants.

Inscriptions under each figure record the lineage associated with the worship of this form of Mahakala and may connect the work to a fifteenth-century Sakya teacher, suggesting that the thangka commemorates a specific ritual observance. If so, the painting may represent an exceptionally early example of the gold-on-black style and provides important evidence for the history of Sakya ritual practice and Tibetan Buddhist art.
