This painting is so wide, you may have to step back a little to see the whole thing. It's a panoramic view of the horse market in Paris, France. The time, an early morning in the 1850s. Workmen paraded the horses for sale up and down the boulevard. You are standing at the edge of the action, watching the horses round the curve. On the far right people are watching in the distance. They've come to shop for a horse. Think how people got around 150 years ago before the automobile, someone always needed a new horse.

Do you see any women? At the time, men thought the horse market wasn't a proper place for women, but the artist, Rosa Bonheur visited the horse market twice a week. How did she do this? She fit in by dressing as a man. No one at the horse market suspected that the artist making sketches was a woman in disguise. Then Bonheur unveiled this painting and her secret was revealed.
