Scene in the Yoshiwara

Hishikawa Moronobu 菱川師宣 Japanese

Not on view

Courtesans are seen from the street through a wooden barred window at a teahouse called Takashimaya, identified by the three characters on a short curtain (noren) at the entrance. Next to the teahouse, a woman in a curtained doorway might be making arrangements with a man outside. Two men carrying goods to sell to the teahouse are walking in the street.
